Islamic Wedding Dresses and Wedding Gowns

Many Muslim brides tend to choose wedding dresses that are traditional, and white. Brides from subcontinent of Asian prefer shalwar-qameez that is scarlet, with henna decorated feet and hands in intricate and beautiful patterns.
Shalwar-qameez
Shalwar-qameez or Qamis/Kammez is a wedding dress that is traditionally worn in the Southern countries of Asia. It is popular in India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, were it is worn widely. Salwar Kammez is worn commonly by Muslim males and women. It is popular as a wedding dress in many Afghani and Pakistani women.
A shalwar is pajama bottom-like, and loose trouser that is wide at the thighs and waist, and tapers down towards the bottom, where it is stitched narrowly at the very bottom edges. Pleats adorn it at the waist level, and are held in place through an elastic band, or drawstring, or more traditionally through woven cord, called ‘Naada’ or ‘Naala’. There are different style takes among the ladies’ shalwars, from the more traditional to the contemporary.
Women’s wedding shalwars are baggy and wide, although the ladies nowadays wear figure hugging or tight shalwars, named ‘Pyjamies’ or ‘Churidar Pyjamies’. One of the more famous versions of shalawar designs is the Patiala Shahi Shalwars, popular among the regions of Malwa and Patiala in Indian Punjab, with the most striking feature about them is their waist cords, Naada or Naala, that are woven.
Kameez
Kameez is a tunic or long shirt, with side seams that are open. These sides, called the ‘Chaak’ are open to about the waist line level, for greater movement for the wearer. A traditional kameez is cut flat and straight, with side cuts that are traditional, but a more contemporary kameez sports set in sleeves, which are inspired by European tastes. A traditional kameez, for both women, usually have loose or normal fitting, although it is more common in modern times to see fashionable Islamic women put on a kameez that is figure hugging.
Typically, a fine kameez tailor will be identified by the intricate and beautiful stitching techniques. Necklines are paid particular attention, as they are beautifully stitched to make them beautiful for the wedding day. The techniques that can be utilized to beautify a wedding kameez are such as beaded necklines, embroidered necklines, decorative necklines, and simple and unadorned necklines.
Somali wedding bride dresses
Other Islamic countries also have location, particular Islamic beliefs specific wedding dresses, as Somali brides prefer beautiful Guntiino, which resemble Indian Saris, and are brightly colored and full length, a head covering of Garbasaar, and slip called Googaro, which is worn underneath the dress. The Dirac or Direh, which is a dress that is lightweight, typically put on over a petticoat or a slip. Gold jewelry and makeup may be worn as accessories, with hair adornments as well.
Other Islamic wedding dresses
Islamic women also favor certain garments for their wedding ceremonies. These include long modesty skirts, beautifully bead or precious metal blouses, a Jalabeeb or Burqa, which cloaks the full length of the body as it is a long garment. Others include a simple head wrap known as the Masar, a Hijab, which is a hair covering head scarf, and Coantino, which is draped over one’s head, as it is a large cloth, and then tied at waist level.

Wedding Dress Tradition

The wedding is one of the oldest traditions and the wedding dress in its many styles can be traced back as far as the Pharaohs. Over the centuries the style of the wedding dress has changed many times but seems to be on a circular route with styles and colour coming back full circle over the course of time.
There have also been many different customs associated with the wedding dress, one being that in ancient times the guests would tear off a piece of the dress and keep it for good luck. The Greek still pin money to the brides wedding dress this being the wedding present. Queen Victoria marked a big change in the wedding dress when she married Prince Albert She chose to wear white symbolizing maidenhood and purity and this still continues today.
Probably the most important aspect of organizing a wedding and getting married is the Wedding Dress itself. Years ago the wedding dress was nearly always white signifying the purity of the bride.
Nowadays it can be of any colour and type according to the culture and desires of the bride. Having only recently been on the rounds of choosing a wedding dress with my future daughter in law, I was surprised at the huge array of wedding dresses on display in all colours and styles, plus the numerous shops available.. Good job the daughter in law had a fair idea of what type of wedding dress she was looking for as we could have been trawling around for years.
I found all the staff in the bridal shop very helpful and extremely patient, what with the endless trying on of dresses and the pure weight of the wedding dress I imagine it can all be very tiring. Having finally picked out two wedding dresses my daughter in law then picked a third wedding dress and now the test began. Along came a friend and between the two of us had to pick the wedding dress we thought was the best, fingers crossed we picked the correct one.
As luck would have we both chose the same wedding dress and it was the one daughter in law liked the best. Thank god for that, not sure what would have happened had we picked the wrong one. So the wedding dress is now ordered and we are waiting for the fittings to be done. I must say my experience of choosing a wedding dress was very pleasurable and was amazed and the sheer variety that was available.
The modern wedding has evolved and changed over the centuries, we now have so much choice church or registry office, tropical island beach or a Scottish castle that the wedding dress will be chosen according to the style of the wedding. The one thing that remains unchanged is the essential role that the wedding dress will play.

The Beauty of an Ivory Wedding Dress

It is a worldwide tradition that the brides should be in white on the wedding day. It is beyond doubt that many brides look gorgeous in stark-white dresses but those women who have fair skin complexion do not. These brides look pale and insignificant when they have white clothes on. Red-haired women also look improper and a bit weird in a traditional white dress. A great way of handling this problem for the two types of brides mentioned above is to wear an ivory wedding dress.
All the styles of traditional white gowns have an ivory wedding dress equivalent. The idea of adding a little colour to your dress but still wearing “white” on your wedding is appealing to many women. Gowns in this beautiful colour suit almost every skin tone and they do not make the ladies wearing them look washed out, nor pale.
Many women like to have quite many beauty-enhancing procedures before their special occasion. In case you have rich, dark hair and you have tanned skin, sticking to the traditional white bridal dress is a good idea. Women of colour could also only benefit from choosing a stark-white gown for the big day as the skin tones are rich and beautiful. If you are one of the types mentioned here, then you don’t have to worry about looking washed out regardless of the stark white. The contrast can only make you look stunning.
However, there are many women who do not tan but get sun-burnt during the summer. These ladies are advised to go for an ivory wedding dress. The added colours will offset fair complexion whereas stark white would simply wash it away. Avoid washing off your alabaster skin by choosing an ivory bridal attire.
Red-haired ladies should also consider an ivory wedding dress. Generally, there are two kinds of redheads. The first kind is the classic red, the second – the auburn redhead. While the first has natural curls with orange-red locks, the second might look like a brunette in certain lighting. I am an auburn redhead, so the last statement concerns me.
Despite having auburn hair I don’t burn-peel-freckle. I wasn’t really worried that I may look washed out in a traditional white bridal gown. Though, I found that an ivory wedding dress suits me better. I had to try many white gowns which for some reason were not right until I finally put on an ivory wedding dress.
After I tried it on, I couldn’t think of choosing a stark-white gown again. The ivory bridal attire suited the auburn highlights in my hair. Even though my dress was not really white it looked quite white as the attendants were wearing burgundy-wine gowns. In conclusion, keeping an open mind when choosing a wedding dress is always a good idea.

Future Mrs T asked:
I have just got engaged and I have my heart set on a beautiful Pronovias wedding dress that I came across when helping my friend organise her wedding. I have been on the Pronovias website but of course there are no prices. Does anyone know the average price for one of these dresses? (I particularly like Higuera, Diamante and Hamlet). Thanks.
