Wedding Planning?
My fiance and I have been engaged for close to a year now. We don’t really plan on getting married within the next year or two, but are still starting to look into what’s to be expected.
We both have a love of Renaissance Faires and currently reside in San Antonio, TX. we have been looking into having our wedding and reception at the Texas Ren Fair out by Houston. They have some affordable wedding and reception packages. The majority of my family lives in California and the majority of my fiance’s family lives in Alabama. We have already made a list of people we MUST have attend and a secondary list of people who we would like to attend if we, and they, could afford to have them come.
Beyond that, we don’t know a thing about what to do before, during, or after a wedding. This will be our first for both of us. We are both 24 years old. I want to know some of things we should expect and plan for at all stages. I know it is a big task for all involved.
I have yet to look up wedding planning sites or advice columns or magazines. I want to avoid getting a wedding planner since most people tend to spend MORE on their special day with one. We want to keep the weeding small with 50 or less guests. We are really interested in the Texas Ren Faire as an option for a place, but of course are open to other things.
Only my sister a few select friends know we are engaged. We do not have rings yet and my fiance wants to ask my mom and dad for my hand first. Once he does that and we have our rings, then we will make it public to them.
Apparently, I didn’t make myself clear as to what my question was even though I said it right in the beginning. What should I expect in terms of planning for a wedding from beginning to end? I don’t know anything at all.

What exactly is the question? I see alot of explaining but you havn’t asked anything….
If you really don’t know anything and don’t have a close friend or family memeber to help I very highly reccomend that you consider getting a wedding planner or spend some time browsing through planning books at the Barnes and Noble first before you make a single plan. The worst thing you can do right now is pick up a wedding magazine…you will get bombarded with about 70% sales pitches and 30% actual planning advice. Pick a nuetral information source like a book who already made their profit. Free sites like theknot.com are really great for finding ideas but ultimately need to get sales from their one-clicks to stay alive.
Go to theknot.com. Do some reading there. Follow their checklists. They even have a budget calculator . . . most helpful.
Start from the necessities:
You, your groom and someone to officiate the wedding
From that point, it’s about preferences and cost.
The places with wedding packages areusually good for a bride and groom that don’t want to have to get into the tiny details, but they can be a little less personal and a little more costly.
I would be happy to send you a detailed list of basic wedding “needs” but it’s too long to put here in answers. Just email me if you want me to pass it along.
