My girlfriend and I are not religious, but like the idea of having a gold and silver (for the bride) set of wedding rings, like the Catholics.

Is this appropriate to do ?
In general, can we just get the rings that we like, or is there a set of guidelines that we should follow ?

You go to the jewelry store and you buy whatever rings you like and can afford.
There are no rules. The preceding poster is correct.
A wedding ring is a symbol not a religious statement. You can get whatever rings you want.
